The following photos have been provided by
Richard "Rick" Morales who worked K-9 from June 1963 to
December 1964. Had not heard from Rick for 40years until he popped
up in a message a few days ago. Rick worked Dewit F-991 one of the
smallest dogs in kennels. Dewit left a lasting impression on him.
Rick and I worked different squads during this time period.
Welcome home Rick - nice to hear from you.

Excerpt taken from one of Ricks
emails:
"Well, You asked for
it. That was me and Dewit. The picture is kind of faded but all in
all OK. Dewit's slab was on your left just before the gate into
the training area. That came in real handy one day when he "turned"
during obedience training and did enough damage on my right arm to
require seven stitches. But at least after I got him back under
control, it was not a long walk to get him back in his kennel before
I went off to the hospital. That was the only time he ever turned on
me and I have to admit that it was my own fault. He really was a
great dog. I think he might have been the smallest dog in the kennel
but at collar time, could be one of the meanest. I remember after
returning from Sentry Dog School in Japan, the Kennel Master asked
me if I would like another dog and I decided to keep Dewit. I was
working him for about three months before going to the school and he
just kind of grew on me. I think it might have been knowing that
with him on leash, no one-no where could walk up on me. The things
we remember, huh?"
Email that started this
page"
"Wow. Talk about taking a
step into the past and walking down memory lane. Hello Vern. My name
is Rick Morales and I also was assigned to Air Police and later K-9
duties at Clark AFB from as best as I can recall, June of 63 to
December of 64. My dog was Dewit, F-991. I have to admit that I do
not remember meeting you although other faces and names in your site
do bring back memories. After the passage of over 40 years and
considering we did have three Squads of Dog Handlers, maybe my lapse
in memory can be forgiven. I read all you had posted about the
405th, re-read it a second time and then just sat and kind of
drifted back in time reliving some old memories. You've done a good
job here and helped a sixty year old man remember back to when he
was eighteen. Those memories led me to some long forgotten photo
albums. My first was with an all white cover decorated by a K-9
outline and the Sq. name and location stenciled on the front. Ring
any bells? Most of the guys in my Squad had them although I don't
remember who the master stencil started with. Anyhow, seems I still
have some decent pictures of guys we served with and can e-mail them
to you if you are interested. Just let me know. Thought I would
write first and introduce myself so if and when you saw the E-Mail
address later, you would at least know what it was about.
